Psalms 138

For the end, a Psalm of David. 1 O Lord, thou hast proved me, and known me. 1

Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising: 1 Thou understandest my thoughts long before. 1

Thou hast traced my path and my bed, 1 And hast foreseen all my ways. 1

For there is no unrighteous word in my tongue: 1 Behold, O Lord, thou hast known all things,

the last and the first: 1 Thou hast fashioned me, and laid thy hand upon me. 1

The knowledge of thee is too wonderful for me; 1 It is very difficult, I cannot attain to it. 1

Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? 1 And whither shall I flee from thy presence? 1

If I should go up to heaven, thou art there: 1 If I should go down to hell, thou art present. 1

If I should spread my wings to fly straight forward, 1 And sojourn at the extremity of the sea, it would be vain, 1

For even there thy hand would guide me, 1 And thy right hand would hold me. 1

When I said, Surely the darkness will cover me; 1 Even the night was light in my luxury. 1

For darkness will not be darkness with thee; 1 But night will be light as day: 1 As its darkness, so shall its light be to thee. 1

For thou, O Lord, hast possessed my reins; 1 Thou hast helped me from my mother’s womb. 1

I will give thee thanks; for thou art fearfully wondrous; 1 Wondrous are thy works; and my soul knows it well. 1

My bones which thou madest in secret were not hidden from thee, 1 Nor my substance, in the lowest parts of the earth. 1

Thine eyes saw my unwrought substance, 1 And all men shall be written in thy book; 1 They shall be formed by day, though there should for a time be no one among them. 1

But thy friends, O God, have been greatly honored by me; 1 Their rule has been greatly strengthened. 1

I will number them, and they shall be multiplied beyond the sand; 1 I awake, and am still with thee. 1

Oh that thou wouldest slay the wicked, O God; 1 Depart from me, ye men of blood. 1

For thou wilt say concerning their thought, 1 That they shall take thy cities in vain. 1

Have I not hated them, O Lord, that hate thee? 1 And wasted away because of thine enemies? 1

I have hated them with perfect hatred; 1 They were counted my enemies. 1

Prove me, O God, and know my heart; 1 Examine me, and know my paths; 1

And see if there is any way of iniquity in me, 1 And lead me in an everlasting way.
