Isaiah 53:5
+ 53:5 a MP: Messiah is “pierced / wounded for our transgressions”. Note: There is no Bible punishment or law for death that specifically involves piercing; stoning or banishment is more common. (Matt 20:28; John 19:34; Rom 4:25) But he was pierced for our rebellious breaches of relationships. 2 + 53:5 b MP: Messiah bears and carries the sins of others. (1 Pet 2:24) He was crushed for our depravities (moral evils). 1 + 53:5 c MP: Messiah’s chastening brings us peace (with God). Implied by the context, this peace is in relationship with our Creator not other humans. (Rom 4:25; 5:15-18; Col 1:20) The punishment that brought our peace was on him; 2 + 53:5 d MP: “By his stripes we are healed / made whole.” Messiah’s atonement brings wholeness and healing to those in association with him.
