Herodes oli raivoissaan, kun tajusi, että idän tähtientutkijat olivat pettäneet hänet. Hän lähetti Betlehemiin sotilaita tappamaan kaupungista ja sen ympäristöstä kaikki kaksivuotiaat ja sitä nuoremmat pojat.
