[ edit] Forſoþ in þo dayes, þe noumbre of diſciplis wexynge, grucchinge of Greekis is maad aȝens Ebrews, for þat þe widewis of hem weren diſpiſid in euery daies myniſtring. Forſoþ þe twelue clepinge to gidere þe multitude of diſciplis, ſeiden, It is not euene þing, vs to forſake þe word of God, and for to myniſtre to bordis. Þerfore, breþeren, biholde ȝe men of ȝou, of good witneſſing, or fame, ſeuene, ful of þe Hooly Goſt and wyſdom, whom we ſchulen ordeyne on þis werk; forſoþ we ſchulen be biſy to preier and myniſterie, or preching, of þe word.

And þe word pleſide to al þe multitude; and þei cheeſiden Sþeuene, a man ful of feiþ and þe Hooly Goſt, and Philip, and Protore, and Nichanore, and Tymon, and Permanam, and Nichol, a geſt, or comelyng, Antiochene. Þei ordeyneden þeſe bifore þe ſiȝt of apoſtlis, and þei preiynge puttiden þe hondis to hem. And þe word of þe Lord wexide, and þe noumbre of diſciplis in Jeruſalem was multiplied moche; alſo moche cumpanye of preſtis obeieden to þe feiþ. Sþeuene, ful of grace and ſtrengþe, made wondris and grete ſignes in þe peple.

Forſoþe ſumme riſen of þe ſynagoge, þat was clepid of Libertyns, and Cirenenſis, and of men of Aliſaundre, and of hem þat weren of Cilice and Aſye, diſputynge wiþ Sþeuene. And þei myȝten not wiþſtonde to þe wyſdom and ſpirit, þat ſpak. Þanne þei priuely ſenten men, þat ſchulden ſeye, hem haue herd him ſeyinge wordis of blaſphemye into Moyſes and God. And ſo þei moueden to gidere þe peple, and eldere men, and ſcribis; and þei rennynge to gidere rauyſcheden him, and brouȝten to into þe counceil. And þei ordeyneden falſe witneſſis, ſeyinge, Þis man ceeſſiþ not for to ſpeke wordis aȝens þe hooly place, and lawe.

Forſoþ we herden hym ſeyinge, For þis Jheſus of Nazareþ ſchal diſtroye þis place, and ſchal chaunge tradiciouns, þe whiche Moyſes bytook to vs. And alle men þat ſaten in þe counceil biholdinge him, ſyȝen þe face of him as þe face of an aungel.
