Lamentations 5
1Remember, O Lord, what has happened to us: 1 Behold, and look on our reproach. 1
2Our inheritance has been turned away to aliens, 1 Our houses to strangers: 1
3We are become orphans, we have no father, 1 Our mothers are as widows. 1
4We have drunk our water for money; 1 Our wood is sold to us for a burden on our neck: 1
5We have been persecuted, 1 We have labored, we have had no rest. 1
6Egypt gave the hand to us, 1 Assyria to their own satisfaction. 1
7Our fathers sinned, and are not: 1 We have borne their iniquities. 1
8Servants have ruled over us: 1 There is none to ransom us out of their hand. 1
9We shall bring in our bread with danger of our lives, 1 Because of the sword of the wilderness. 1
10Our skin is blackened like an oven; 1 They are convulsed, because of the storms of famine. 1
11They humbled the women in Zion, 1 The virgins in the cities of Judah. 1
12Princes were hanged up by their hands: the elders were not honored. 1
13The chosen men lifted up the voice in weeping, 1 And the youths fainted under the wood. 1
14And the elders ceased from the gate, 1 The chosen men ceased from their music. 1
15The joy of our heart has ceased; 1 Our dance is turned into mourning. 1
16The crown has fallen from our head: 1 Yea, woe to us! for we have sinned. 1
17For this has grief come; our heart is sorrowful: 1 For this our eyes are darkened. 1
18Over the mountain of Zion, because it is made desolate, 1 Foxes have walked therein. 1
19But thou, O Lord, shalt dwell forever; 1 Thy throne shall endure to generation and generation. 1
20Wherefore wilt thou utterly forget us, 1 And abandon us a long time? 1
21Turn us, O Lord, to thee, and we shall be turned; 1 And renew our days as before. 1
22For thou hast indeed rejected us; 1 Thou hast been very wroth against us.
