It was the start of Passover. Considering the command in (Deut 21:22-23), the land would be defiled if the body was left to hang overnight, unless it was buried. Thirdly Jospehus writes in Wars of the Jews (4.5.2) “The Jews are so careful about funeral rites that even those who are crucified because they are found guilty are taken down and buried before sunset.” There was a common burial ground for criminals.
