Amos 3
1Hear this word that Yahweh has spoken against you, people of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt: 1
2“I have chosen only you 1 from all the families of the earth. 1 Therefore I will punish you 1 for all your sins.” 1
3Will two walk together 1 unless they have agreed? 1
4Will a lion roar in the forest 1 when he has no victim? 1 Will a young lion growl from his den 1 if he has caught nothing? 1
5Can a bird fall in a trap on the ground 1 when no bait is set for him? 1 Will a trap spring up from the ground 1 when it has not caught anything? 1
6If a trumpet sounds in a city, 1 will the people not tremble? 1 If disaster overtakes a city, 1 has Yahweh not sent it? 1
7Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing 1 unless he reveals his plan to his servants the prophets. 1
8The lion has roared; 1 who will not fear? 1 The Lord Yahweh has spoken; 1 who will not prophesy? 1
9Proclaim this in the fortresses at Ashdod, 1 and in the fortresses in the land of Egypt; 1 say, “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria 1 and see what great confusion is in her, 1 and what oppression is in her. 1
10For they do not know how to do right 1 —this is Yahweh's declaration— 1 They store up violence 1 and destruction in their fortresses.” 1
11Therefore, this is what the Lord Yahweh says: 1 “An enemy will surround the land, 1 and pull down your strongholds 1 and plunder your fortresses.” 1
12This is what Yahweh says: 1 “As the shepherd rescues out of the mouth of the lion 1 two legs only, or a piece of an ear; 1 so will the people of Israel who live in Samaria be rescued; 1 they will be left with only the corner of a couch 1 or a piece of a bed.” 1
13Hear and testify 1 against the house of Jacob 1 —this is the declaration of the Lord Yahweh, the God of hosts: 1
14“For in the day that I punish the sins of Israel, 1 I will also punish the altars of Bethel. 1 The horns of the altar will be cut off 1 and fall to the ground. 1
15I will destroy the winter house 1 with the summer house. 1 The houses of ivory will perish, 1 and the large houses will vanish, 1 —this is Yahweh's declaration.”
