I was asleep, but my heart was awake. 1 There is the sound of my beloved knocking and saying, 1 “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled one, 1 for my head is wet with dew, 1 my hair with the night's dampness.” 1

“I have taken off my robe; must I put it on again? 1 I have washed my feet; must I get them dirty?” 1

My beloved put in his hand through the opening of the door latch, 1 and my heart was stirred up for him. 1

I got up to open the door for my beloved; 1 my hands were dripping with myrrh, 1 my fingers with moist myrrh, 1 on the door handle. 1

I opened the door for my beloved, 1 but my beloved had turned and gone. 1 My heart sank when he spoke. + 5:6 Some versions read sank because he had turned away . 1 I looked for him, but I did not find him; 1 I called him, but he did not answer me. 1

My beloved is radiant and ruddy, 1 outstanding among ten thousand. 1

His head is the purest gold; 1 his hair is curly and as black as a raven. 1
