Proverbs 6
1My son, if you set aside your money as a guarantee for your neighbor's loan, 1 if you gave your promise for a loan of someone you do not know, 1
2then you have laid a trap for yourself by your promise 1 and you have been caught by the words of your mouth. 1
3When you are caught by your words, my son, do this and save yourself, 1 since you have fallen into the hand of your neighbor; 1 go and humble yourself and make your case before your neighbor. 1
4Give your eyes no sleep 1 and your eyelids no slumber. 1
5Save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, 1 like a bird from the hand of the fowler. 1
6Look at the ant, you lazy person, 1 consider her ways, and be wise. 1
7It has no commander, 1 officer, or ruler, 1
8yet it prepares its food in the summer 1 and during the harvest it stores up what it will eat. 1
9How long will you sleep, you lazy person? 1 When will you rise from your sleep? 1
10“A little sleep, a little slumber, 1 a little folding of the hands to rest”— 1
11and your poverty will come like a robber 1 and your needs like an armed soldier. 1
12A worthless person—a wicked man— 1 lives by the crookedness of his speech, 1
13winking his eyes, making signals with his feet 1 and pointing with his fingers. 1
14He plots evil with deceit in his heart; 1 he always stirs up discord. 1
15Therefore his disaster will overtake him in an instant; 1 in a moment he will be broken beyond healing. 1
16There are six things that Yahweh hates, 1 seven that are disgusting to him. 1
17The eyes of a proud person, a tongue that lies, 1 hands that shed the blood of innocent people, 1
18a heart that invents wicked schemes, 1 feet that quickly run to do evil, 1
19a witness who breathes out lies 1 and one who sows discord among brothers. 1
20My son, obey the command of your father 1 and do not forsake the teaching of your mother. 1
21Always bind them on your heart; 1 tie them about your neck. 1
22When you walk, they will guide you; 1 when you sleep, they will watch over you; 1 and when you wake up, they will teach you. 1
23For the commands are a lamp, and the teaching is a light; 1 the corrections that come by instruction are the way of life. 1
24It keeps you from the immoral woman, 1 from the smooth words of an immoral woman. 1
25Do not lust in your heart after her beauty 1 and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes. 1
26Sleeping with a prostitute can cost the price of a loaf of bread, 1 but the wife of another may cost you your very life. 1
27Can a man carry a fire against his chest 1 without burning his clothes? 1
28Can a man walk on hot coals 1 without scorching his feet? 1
29So is the man who sleeps with his neighbor's wife; 1 the one who sleeps with her will not go unpunished. 1
30People do not despise a thief if he steals 1 to satisfy his need when he is hungry. 1
31Yet if he is caught, he will pay back seven times what he stole; 1 he must give up everything of value in his house. 1
32The one who commits adultery has no sense; 1 the one who does it destroys himself. 1
33Wounds and shame are what he deserves 1 and his disgrace will not be wiped away. 1
34For jealousy makes a man furious; 1 he will show no mercy when he takes his revenge. 1
35He will accept no compensation 1 and he cannot be bought off, though you offer him many gifts.
