Isaiah 33
1Woe to you who destroy, but you were not destroyed; 2 and who betray, but nobody betrayed you! 1 When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed; 2 and when you have finished betrayal, you will be betrayed. 1
2Adonai, be gracious to us. We have waited for you. 2 Be our strength every morning, 2 our yishu'ah ·salvation· also in the time of trouble. 1
3At the noise of the thunder, the peoples have fled. 2 When you lift yourself up, the nations are scattered. 1
4Your plunder will be gathered as the caterpillar gathers. 2 Men will leap on it as locusts leap. 1
5Adonai is exalted, for he dwells on high. 2 He has filled Zion [Mountain ridge, Marking] with mishpat ·justice· and righteousness. 1
6There will be stability in your times, abundance of yishu'ah ·salvation·, wisdom, and knowledge. 2 The fear of Adonai is your treasure. 1
7Behold, their valiant ones cry outside; 2 the ambassadors of peace weep bitterly. 1
8The highways are desolate. 2 The traveling man ceases. 2 The covenant is broken. 2 He has despised the cities. 2 He does not respect man. 1
9The land mourns and languishes. 2 Lebanon is confounded and withers away. 2 Sharon is like a desert, and Bashan and Carmel are stripped bare. 1
10“Now I will arise,” says Adonai; 2 “Now I will lift myself up. 2 Now I will be exalted. 1
11You will conceive chaff. 2 You will give birth to stubble. 2 Your breath is a fire that will devour you. 1
12The peoples will be like the burning of lime, 2 like thorns that are cut down and burned in the fire. 1
13Sh'ma ·Hear obey·, you who are far off, what I have done; 2 and, you who are near, acknowledge my might.” 1
14The people who sin ·intentionally miss the mark goal· in Zion [Mountain ridge, Marking] are afraid. 2 Trembling has seized the godless ones. 1 Who among us can live with the devouring fire? 2 Who among us can live with everlasting burning? 1
15He who walks righteously, 2 and speaks blamelessly; 2 He who despises the gain of oppressions, 2 who gestures with his hands, refusing to take a bribe, 2 who stops his ears from sh'ma ·hearing obeying· plots of blood, + 33:15 Note: Blood figuratively means murder. 2 and shuts his eyes from looking at evil— 1
16he will dwell on high. 2 His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks. 2 His bread will be supplied. 2 His waters will be sure. 1
17Your eyes will see the king in his beauty. 2 They will see a distant land. 1
18Your heart will meditate on the terror. 2 Where is he who counted? 2 Where is he who weighed? 2 Where is he who counted the towers? 1
19You will no longer see the fierce people, 2 a people of a deep speech that you can’t sh'ma ·hear understand obey·, 2 with a strange language that you can’t understand. 1
20Look at Zion [Mountain ridge, Marking], the city of our appointed festivals. 2 Your eyes will see Jerusalem [City of peace], a quiet habitation, 2 a tent that won’t be removed. 1 Its stakes will never be plucked up, 2 nor will any of its cords be broken. 1
21But there Adonai will be with us in majesty, 2 a place of wide rivers and streams, 2 in which no galley with oars will go, 2 neither will any gallant ship pass by there. 1
22For Adonai is our judge. 2 Adonai is our Torah-giver. 2 Adonai is our king. 2 He will save us. 1
23Your rigging is untied. 2 They couldn’t strengthen the foot of their mast. 2 They couldn’t spread the sail. 1 Then the prey of a great plunder was divided. 2 The lame took the prey. 1
24The inhabitant won’t say, “I am sick.” 2 The people who dwell therein will be forgiven their depravity (moral evil).
