Isaiah 57
1The upright perish, 2 and no one lays it to heart. 1 Men of chesed ·loving-kindness· are taken away, 2 and no one considers that the upright is taken away from the evil. 1
2He enters into peace. 2 They rest in their beds, 2 each one who walks in his uprightness. 1
3“But draw near here, you sons of a sorceress, 2 you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes. 1
4Whom do you mock? 2 Against whom do you make a wide mouth, 2 and stick out your tongue? 1 Are not you children of a rebellious breach of relationship, 2 and offspring of falsehood, 1
5you who inflame yourselves among the oaks, 2 under every green tree; 1 who kill the children in the valleys, 2 under the clefts of the rocks? 1
6Among the smooth stones of the valley is your portion; 2 they, they are your lot. 1 You have even poured a drink offering to them. 2 You have offered an offering. 2 Shall I be appeased for these things? 1
7On a high and lofty mountain you have set your bed. 2 You also went up there to offer sacrifice. 1
8You have set up your memorial behind the doors and the posts; 2 for you have exposed yourself to someone besides me, 2 and have gone up; 1 you have enlarged your bed, 2 and made you a covenant with them. 2 You 'ahav ·affectionately loved· what you saw on their bed. 1
9You went to the king with oil, 2 and increased your perfumes, 1 and sent your ambassadors far off, 2 and degraded yourself even to Sheol ·Place of the dead·. 1
10You were wearied with the length of your ways; 2 yet you didn’t say, ‘It is in vain.’ 1 You found a reviving of your strength; 2 therefore you were not faint. 1
11“Whom have you dreaded and feared, 2 so that you lie, 2 and have not remembered me, nor laid it to your heart? 1 Haven’t I held my peace for a long time, 2 and you don’t fear me? 1
12I will declare your righteousness; 2 and as for your works, they will not benefit you. 1
13When you cry, 2 let those whom you have gathered deliver you; 1 but the wind will take them. 2 A breath will carry them all away: 1 but he who takes refuge in me will possess the land, 2 and will inherit my holy mountain.” 1
14He will say, “Build up, build up, prepare the way! 2 Remove the stumbling-block out of the way of my people.” 1
15For thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, 2 whose name is Holy: 1 “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, 2 to revive the spirit of the humble, 2 and to revive the heart of the contrite. 1
16For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always angry; 2 for the spirit would faint before me, 2 and the souls whom I have made. 1
17I was angry because of the depravity (moral evil) of his covetousness, and struck him; 2 I hid myself and was angry; 2 and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart. 1
18I have seen his ways, and will heal him: 2 I will lead him also, 2 and restore comforts to him and to his mourners. 1
19I create the fruit of the lips: 2 Peace, peace, to him who is far off and to him who is near,” + 57:19. Quoted in Eph 2:17 2 says Adonai; “and I will heal them.” 1
20But the wicked are like the troubled divorced sea; 2 for it can’t rest, and its waters dirge up mire and mud. 1
21“There is no peace,” says my God, 2 “for the wicked.”
