Isaiah 60
1+ 60:1 (1-2) MP: The Light shines with the glory of God, yet darkness covers the people, (lack of understanding). (John 1:9-11, 1:14) “Arise, shine; for your light has come, 2 and Adonai’s kavod ·weighty glory· has risen on you. 1
2+ 60:2. MP: God will set Messiah apart amidst people who do not recognize or understand (in darkness). (John 1:26, 1:32-34; 2 Cor 4:4-6) For, behold, darkness + 60:2 (2-3) MP: The light of Messiah draws Gentile nations. Messiah is accepted by the Gentiles (Is 49:6, 55:4-5), yet was rejected by “his own” (Is 50:3). (Luke 2:30-32; John 1:4-5) will cover the earth, 2 and thick darkness the peoples; 1 but Adonai will arise on you, 2 and his kavod ·weighty glory· shall be seen on you. 1
3+ 60:3. MP: Gentile Kings will seek out the birth of Messiah. (See also Ps 72:10, 72:15; Is 60:6). (Matt 2:1-2) Nations will come to your light, + 60:3. Quoted in Rev 21:24 2 and kings to the brightness of your rising. 1
4“Lift up your eyes all around, and see: 2 they all gather themselves together. 2 They come to you. 1 Your sons will come from far away, 2 and your daughters will be carried in arms. 1
5Then you shall see and be radiant, 2 and your heart will thrill and be enlarged; 1 because the abundance of the sea will be turned to you. 2 The wealth of the nations will come to you. 1
6+ 60:6. MP: Presented with gold and frankincense, the caravans coming from Sheba (northern Africa) will proclaim the good news of the praises of Yahweh! (See also Ps 72:10, 72:15; Is 60:6). (Matt 2:11) A multitude of camels will cover you, 2 the dromedaries of Midian [Strife] and Ephah. 1 All from Sheba will come. 2 They will bring gold and frankincense, 2 and will proclaim the tehilahot ·praise songs· of Adonai. 1
7+ 60:7. MP: Offering sacrifices to God that are appropriate and acceptable glorify His house. (Historically fulfilled in Ezra 6:9; Spiritually fulfilled by Rom 12:1, 15:16). (Rom 12:1, 15:16; Heb 13:15-16) All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered together to you. 2 The rams of Nebaioth will serve you. 1 They will be accepted as offerings on my altar; 2 and I will beautify my glorious house. 1
8“Who are these who fly as a cloud, 2 and as the doves to their windows? 1
9Surely the islands will wait for me, 2 and the ships of Tarshish first, 1 to bring your sons from far, 2 their silver and their gold with them, 1 for the name of Adonai your God, 2 and for haKadosh Isra'el [the Holy One of God prevails], 2 because he has glorified you. 1
10“Foreigners will build up your walls, 2 and their kings will serve you: 1 for in my wrath I struck you, 2 but in my favor have I had racham ·compassionate merciful love· on you. 1
11Your gates also shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day + 60:11. Quoted in Rev 21:25 nor night; that men may bring to you the wealth of the nations, and their kings led captive. 1
12For that nation and kingdom that will not serve you shall perish; yes, those nations shall be utterly wasted. 1
13“The kavod ·weighty glory· of Lebanon shall come to you, the cypress tree, the pine, and the box tree together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious. 1
14The sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you; 2 and all those who despised you will hawa ·bow low, prostrate· themselves down at the soles of your feet. + 60:14. Quoted in Rev 3:9 1 They will call you Adonai’s City, 2 The Zion [Mountain ridge, Marking] of haKadosh Isra'el [the Holy One of God prevails]. 1
15“Whereas you have been forsaken and hated, 2 so that no one passed through you, 1 I will make you an eternal excellency, 2 a joy of many generations. 1
16You will also drink the milk of the nations, 2 and will nurse from royal breasts. 1 Then you will know that I, Adonai, am the One who saves you, 2 your Redeemer, 2 the 'Avir Ya'akov [Mighty One of Supplanter]. 1
17For bronze I will bring gold; 2 for iron I will bring silver; 2 for wood, bronze, 2 and for stones, iron. 1 I will also make peace your governor, 2 and righteousness your ruler. 1
18Violence shall no more be sh'ma ·heard obeyed· in your land, 2 nor desolation or destruction within your borders; 1 but you will call your walls Yishu'ah ·Salvation·, 2 and your gates Tehilah ·Praise song·. 1
19The sun will be no more your light by day; 2 nor will the brightness of the moon give light to you, 1 but Adonai will be your everlasting light, 2 and your God will be your glory. 1
20Your sun will not go down any more, 2 nor will your moon withdraw itself; 1 for Adonai will be your everlasting light, + 60:20. (19-20) Quoted in Rev 21:23, 22:5 2 and the days of your mourning will end. 1
21+ 60:21. MPr: Rabbi Johanan also said: The son of David will come only in a generation that is either altogether righteous or altogether wicked. Either “in a generation that is altogether righteous,” – as it is written, “Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land forever” (Is 60:21). Or “altogether wicked” - as it is written, “and he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor” (Is 59:16). For it is also written, “For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it” (Is 48:11). (Is 60:21 in Talmud Sanhedrin Folio 98A). (Matt 24:21-22) Then your people will all be righteous. 2 They will inherit the land forever, 2 the branch of my planting, 2 the work of my hands, 2 that I may be glorified. 1
22The little one will become a thousand, 2 and the small one a strong nation. 2 I, Adonai, will do this quickly in its time.”
