Proverbs 13
1A wise son listens to his father’s instruction, 2 but a scoffer does not sh'ma ·hear obey· rebuke. 1
2By the fruit of his lips, a man enjoys good things; 2 but the unfaithful crave violence. 1
3He who guards his mouth guards his soul. 2 One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. 1
4The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, 2 but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied. 1
5A upright man hates lies, 2 but a wicked man brings shame and disgrace. 1
6Righteousness guards the way of integrity, 2 but wickedness overthrows the person of habitual sin ·missing the mark·. 1
7There are some who pretend to be rich, yet have nothing. 2 There are some who pretend to be poor, yet have great wealth. 1
8The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, 2 but the poor sh'ma ·hear obey· no threats. 1
9The light of the upright shines brightly, 2 but the lamp candle of the wicked is snuffed out. 1
10Pride only breeds quarrels, 2 but with ones who take advice is wisdom. 1
11Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, 2 but he who gathers by hand makes it grow. 1
12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, 2 but when longing is fulfilled, it is a tree of life. 1
13Whoever despises instruction will pay for it, 2 but he who respects a charge will be rewarded. 1
14The teaching of the wise is a spring of life, 2 to turn from the snares of death. 1
15Good understanding wins chen ·grace·; 2 but the way of the unfaithful is hard. 1
16Every prudent man acts from knowledge, 2 but a fool exposes folly. 1
17A wicked messenger falls into trouble, 2 but a trustworthy envoy gains healing. 1
18Poverty and shame come to him who refuses discipline, 2 but he who heeds correction shall be honored. 1
19Longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, 2 but fools detest turning from evil. 1
20One who walks with wise men grows wise, 2 but a companion of fools suffers harm. 1
21Misfortune pursues people who sin ·intentionally miss the mark goal·, 2 but prosperity rewards the upright. 1
22A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, 2 but the wealth of the sinner ·deviant (from the standard goal) person· is stored for the upright. 1
23An abundance of food is in poor people’s fields, 2 but lo'mishpat ·injustice· sweeps it away. 1
24One who spares the rod hates his son, 2 but one who 'ahav ·affectionately loves· him is careful to discipline him. 1
25The upright one eats to the satisfying of his soul, 2 but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.
