Proverbs 19
1Better is the poor who walks in his integrity 2 than he who is perverse in his lips and is a fool. 1
2It is not good to have zeal without knowledge; 2 nor being hasty with one’s feet and sins ·deviates (from the standard goal)·. 1
3The foolishness of man subverts his way; 2 his heart rages against Adonai. 1
4Wealth adds many friends, 2 but the poor is separated from his friend. 1
5A false witness shall not be unpunished. 2 He who pours out lies shall not go free. 1
6Many will entreat the favor of a ruler, 2 and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts. 1
7All the relatives of the poor shun him: 2 how much more do his friends avoid him! 2 He pursues them with pleas, but they are gone. 1
8He who gets wisdom 'ahav ·affectionately loves· his own soul. 2 He who keeps understanding shall find good. 1
9A false witness shall not be unpunished. 2 He who utters lies shall perish. 1
10Delicate living is not appropriate for a fool, 2 much less for a servant to have rule over princes. 1
11The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger. 2 It is his glory to overlook a rebellious breach of relationship. 1
12The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion, 2 but his favor is like dew on the grass. 1
13A foolish son is the calamity of his father. 2 A wife’s quarrels are a continual dripping. 1
14House and riches are an inheritance from fathers, 2 but a prudent wife is from Adonai. 1
15Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep. 2 The idle soul shall suffer hunger. 1
16He who keeps a mitzvah ·instruction· keeps his soul, 2 but he who is contemptuous in his ways shall die. 1
17He who has pity on the poor lends to Adonai; 2 he will reward him. 1
18Discipline your son, for there is hope; 2 don’t be a willing party to his death. 1
19A hot-tempered man must pay the penalty, 2 for if you rescue him, you must do it again. 1
20Sh'ma ·Hear obey· counsel and receive instruction, 2 that you may be wise in your latter end. 1
21There are many plans in a man’s heart, 2 but Adonai’s counsel will prevail. 1
22That which makes a man to be desired is his chesed ·loving-kindness·. 2 A poor man is better than a liar. 1
23The fear of Adonai leads to life, then contentment; 2 he rests and will not be touched by trouble. 1
24The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; 2 he will not so much as bring it to his mouth again. 1
25Flog a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; 2 rebuke one who has understanding, and he will gain knowledge. 1
26He who robs his father and drives away his mother, 2 is a son who causes shame and brings reproach. 1
27If you stop sh'ma ·hearing obeying· instruction, my son, 2 you will be lead astray, intoxicated, unintentional sin ·error· from the words of knowledge. 1
28A corrupt witness mocks mishpat ·justice·, 2 and the mouth of the wicked gulps down vain striving of iniquity. 1
29Penalties are prepared for scoffers, 2 and beatings for the backs of fools.
