Proverbs 6
1My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, 2 if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger; 1
2You are trapped by the words of your mouth. 2 You are ensnared with the words of your mouth. 1
3Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, 2 since you have come into the hand of your neighbor. 2 Go, humble yourself. 2 Press your plea with your neighbor. 1
4Give no sleep to your eyes, 2 nor slumber to your eyelids. 1
5Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, 2 like a bird from the snare of the fowler. 1
6Go to the ant, you sluggard. 2 Consider her ways, and be wise; 1
7which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, 1
8provides her bread in the summer, 2 and gathers her food in the harvest. 1
9How long will you sleep, sluggard? 2 When will you arise out of your sleep? 1
10A little sleep, a little slumber, 2 a little folding of the hands to sleep: 1
11so your poverty will come as a robber, 2 and your scarcity as an armed man. 1
12A worthless person, a man of vain striving of iniquity, 2 is he who walks with a perverse mouth; 1
13who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, 2 who motions with his fingers; 1
14in whose heart is perverseness, 2 who devises evil continually, 2 who always sows discord. 1
15Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. 2 He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy. 1
16There are six things which Adonai hates; 2 yes, seven which are an abomination to him: 1
17haughty eyes, a lying tongue, 2 hands that shed innocent blood; 1
18a heart that devises vain striving of iniquity schemes, 2 feet that are swift in running to mischief, 1
19a false witness who utters lies, 2 and he who sows discord among brothers. 1
20My son, keep your father’s mitzvah ·instruction·, 2 and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching. 1
21Bind them continually on your heart. 2 Tie them around your neck. 1
22When you walk, it will lead you. 2 When you sleep, it will watch over you. 2 When you awake, it will talk with you. 1
23For the mitzvah ·instruction· is a lamp candle, 2 and the Torah ·Teaching· is light. 2 Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, 1
24to keep you from the immoral woman, 2 from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue. 1
25Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart, 2 neither let her captivate you with her eyelids. 1
26For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread. 2 The adulteress hunts for your precious life. 1
27Can a man scoop fire into his lap, 2 and his clothes not be burned? 1
28Or can one walk on hot coals, 2 and his feet not be scorched? 1
29So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife. 2 Whoever touches her will not be unpunished. 1
30Men don’t despise a thief, 2 if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry: 1
31but if he is found, he shall restore seven times. 2 He shall give all the wealth of his house. 1
32He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. 2 He who does it destroys his own soul. 1
33He will get wounds and dishonor. 2 His reproach will not be wiped away. 1
34For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband. 2 He won’t spare in the day of vengeance. 1
35He won’t regard any ransom, 2 neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.
