Job 14
Man, who is born of woman, 1 lives only a few days and is full of trouble. 1
He sprouts from the ground like a flower and is cut down; 1 he flees like a shadow and does not last. 1
Do you look at any of these? 1 Do you bring me into judgment with you? 1
Who can bring something clean out of something unclean? No one. 1
Man's days are determined. 1 The number of his months is with you; 1 you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass. 1
Look away from him that he may rest, 1 so that he may enjoy his day like a hired man if he can do so. 1
There can be hope for a tree; 1 if it is cut down, it might sprout again, 1 so that its tender stalk does not disappear. 1
Though its root grows old in the earth, 1 and its stump dies in the ground, 1
yet even if it only smells water, it will bud 1 and send out branches like a plant. 1
But man dies; he becomes weak; 1 indeed, man stops breathing, and then where is he? 1
As water disappears from a lake, 1 and as a river loses water and dries up, 1
so people lie down and do not rise again. 1 Until the heavens are no more, they will not awake 1 nor be roused out of their sleep. 1
Oh, that you would hide me away in Sheol away from troubles, 1 and that you would keep me in private until your wrath is over, 1 that you would set me a fixed time to stay there and then call me to mind! 1
If a man dies, will he live again? 1 If so, I would wish to wait all my weary time there 1 until my release should come. 1
You would call, and I would answer you. 1 You would have a desire for the work of your hands. 1
You would number and care for my footsteps; 1 you would not keep track of my sin. 1
My transgression would be sealed up in a bag; 1 you would cover up my iniquity. 1
But even mountains fall and come to nothing; 1 even rocks are moved out of their place; 1
the waters wear down the stones; 1 their flooding washes away the dust of the earth. 1 Like this, you destroy the hope of man. 1
You always defeat him, and he passes away; 1 you change his face and send him away to die. 1
If his sons are honored, he does not know it; 1 and if they are brought low, he does not see it. 1
He feels only the pain of his own body, 1 and he mourns for himself.
