Job 33
1So now, Job, I beg you, hear my speech; 1 listen to all my words. 1
2See now, I have opened my mouth; 1 my tongue has spoken in my mouth. 1
3My words come from the uprightness of my heart; 1 my lips speak pure knowledge. 1
4The Spirit of God has made me; 1 the breath of the Almighty has given me life. 1
5If you can, answer me; 1 set your words in order before me and stand up. 1
6See, I am just as you are in God's sight; 1 I also have been formed out of the clay. 1
7See, terror of me will not make you afraid; 1 neither will my pressure be heavy upon you. 1
8You have certainly spoken in my hearing; 1 I have heard the sound of your words saying, 1
9'I am clean and without transgression; 1 I am innocent, and there is no sin in me. 1
10See, God finds opportunities to attack me; 1 he regards me as his enemy. 1
11He puts my feet in stocks; 1 he watches all my paths.' 1
12See, in this you are not right—I will answer you, 1 for God is greater than man. 1
13Why do you struggle against him? 1 He does not account for any of his doings. 1
14For God speaks once— 1 yes, twice, though man does not notice it. 1
15In a dream, in a vision of the night, 1 when deep sleep falls upon men, 1 in slumber on the bed— 1
16then God opens the ears of men, 1 and frightens them with threats, 1
17in order to pull man back from his sinful purposes, 1 and keep pride from him. 1
18God keeps man's life back from the pit, 1 his life from crossing over to death. 1
19Man is punished also with pain on his bed, 1 with constant agony in his bones, 1
20so that his life abhors food, 1 and his soul abhors delicacies. 1
21His flesh is consumed away so that it cannot be seen; 1 his bones, once not seen, now stick out. 1
22Indeed, his soul draws close to the pit, 1 his life to those who wish to destroy it. 1
23But if there is an angel who can be a mediator for him, 1 a mediator, one from among the thousands of angels, 1 to show him what is right to do, 1
24and if the angel is kind to him and says to God, 1 'Save this person from going down to the pit; 1 I have found a ransom for him,' 1
25then his flesh will become fresher than a child's; 1 he will return to the days of his youthful strength. 1
26He will pray to God, and God will be kind to him, 1 so that he sees God's face with joy. 1 God will give the person his triumph. 1
27Then that person will sing in front of other people and say, 1 'I sinned and perverted that which was right, 1 but my sin was not punished. 1
28God has rescued my soul from going down into the pit; 1 my life will continue to see light.' 1
29See, God does all these things with a person, 1 twice, yes, even three times, 1
30to bring his soul back from the pit, 1 so that he may be enlightened with the light of life. 1
31Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; 1 be silent and I will speak. 1
32If you have anything to say, answer me; 1 speak, for I wish to prove that you are in the right. 1
33If not, then listen to me; 1 remain silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”
