Job 5
1Call out now; is there anyone who will answer you? 1 To which of the holy ones will you turn? 1
2For anger kills the foolish man; 1 jealousy kills the silly one. 1
3I have seen a foolish person taking root, 1 but suddenly I cursed his home. 1
4His children are far from safety; 1 they are crushed in the city gate. 1 There is no one to rescue them. 1
5The hungry eat up their harvest; 1 they even take it from among the thorns. 1 The thirsty pant for their wealth. 1
6For difficulties do not come out from the soil; 1 neither does trouble sprout from the ground. 1
7Instead, mankind is born for trouble, 1 just as sparks fly upward. 1
8But as for me, I would turn to God himself; 1 to him I would commit my cause— 1
9he who does great and unsearchable things, 1 marvelous things without number. 1
10He gives rain on the earth, 1 and sends water on the fields. 1
11He does this in order to set up on high those who are low; 1 to raise to safety those who mourn. 1
12He breaks the plans of the crafty people, 1 so that their hands cannot achieve success. 1
13He traps wise people in their own crafty actions; 1 the plans of twisted people are hurried to their end. 1
14They encounter darkness in the daytime, 1 and grope at noonday as if it were night. 1
15But he saves the poor person from the sword in their mouths 1 and the needy person from the hand of mighty people. 1
16So the poor person has hope, 1 and injustice shuts her own mouth. 1
17See, blessed is the man whom God corrects; 1 therefore, do not despise the chastening of the Almighty. 1
18For he wounds and then binds up; 1 he wounds and then his hands heal. 1
19He will rescue you out of six troubles; 1 indeed, in seven troubles, no evil will touch you. 1
20In famine he will ransom you from death, 1 and in war from the hands of the sword. 1
21You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; 1 and you will not be afraid of destruction when it comes. 1
22You will laugh at destruction and famine, 1 and you will not be afraid of beasts of the earth. 1
23For you will have a covenant with the stones in your field, 1 and the beasts of the field will be at peace with you. 1
24You will know that your tent is in safety; 1 you will visit your sheepfold and you will not miss anything. 1
25You will also know that your seed will be great, 1 that your offspring will be like the grass on the ground. 1
26You will come to your grave at a full age, 1 like a stack of grain bundles that goes up at its time. 1
27See, we have examined this matter; it is like this; 1 listen to it, and know it for yourself.”
