Job 39
Do you know at what time the wild goats in the rocks bear their young? 1 Can you watch when the deer are having their fawns? 1
Can you count the months that they gestate? 1 Do you know the time when they bear their young? 1
They crouch down and birth their young, 1 and then they finish their labor pains. 1
Their young ones become strong and grow up in the open fields; 1 they go out and do not come back again. 1
Who let the wild donkey go free? 1 Who has untied the bonds of the swift donkey, 1
whose home I have made in the Arabah, 1 his house in the salt land? 1
He laughs in scorn at the noises in the city; 1 he does not hear the driver's shouts. 1
He roams over the mountains as his pastures; 1 there he looks for every green plant to eat. 1
Will the wild ox be happy to serve you? 1 Will he consent to stay by your manger? 1
Can you use ropes to hold the wild ox in the furrows? 1 Will he harrow the valleys as he follows after you? 1
Will you trust him because his strength is great? 1 Will you leave your work to him to do? 1
Will you depend on him to bring your grain home, 1 to gather the grain for your threshing floor? 1
The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, 1 but are they the pinions and plumage of love? 1
For she leaves her eggs on the earth, 1 and she lets them keep warm in the dust; 1
she forgets that a foot might crush them 1 or that a wild beast might trample them. 1
She deals roughly with her young ones as if they were not hers; 1 she does not fear that her labor might have been in vain, 1
because God has deprived her of wisdom 1 and has not given her any understanding. 1
When she runs swiftly, 1 she laughs in scorn at the horse and its rider. 1
Have you given the horse his strength? 1 Did you clothe his neck with his flowing mane? 1
Have you ever made him jump like a locust? 1 The majesty of his snorting is fearsome. 1
He paws in might and rejoices in his strength; 1 he rushes out to meet the weapons. 1
He mocks fear and is not dismayed; 1 he does not turn back from the sword. 1
The quiver rattles against his flank, 1 along with the flashing spear and the javelin. 1
He swallows up ground with fierceness and rage; 1 at the trumpet's sound, he cannot stand in one place. 1
Whenever the trumpet sounds, he says, 'Aha!' 1 He smells the battle from far away— 1 the thunderous shouts of the commanders and the outcries. 1
Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars, 1 that he stretches out his wings for the south? 1
Is it at your orders that the eagle mounts up 1 and makes his nest in high places? 1
He lives on cliffs and makes his home 1 on the peaks of cliffs, a stronghold. 1
From there he searches for victims; 1 his eyes see them from very far away. 1
His young also drink up blood; 1 where killed people are, there he is.”
