Job 20
Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said, 1
“My thoughts make me answer quickly 1 because of the worry that is in me. 1
I hear a rebuke that dishonors me, 1 but a spirit from my understanding answers me. 1
Do you not know this fact from ancient times, 1 when God placed man on earth: 1
the triumph of a wicked man is short, 1 and the joy of a godless man lasts only for a moment? 1
Though his height reaches up to the heavens, 1 and his head reaches to the clouds, 1
yet such a person will perish permanently like his own feces; 1 those who have seen him will say, 'Where is he?' 1
He will fly away like a dream and will not be found; 1 indeed, he will be chased away like a vision of the night. 1
The eye that saw him will see him no more; 1 his place will see him no longer. 1
His children will apologize to poor people; 1 his hands will have to give back his wealth. 1
His bones are full of youthful strength, 1 but it will lie down with him in the dust. 1
Although wickedness is sweet in his mouth, 1 although he hides it under his tongue, 1
although he holds it there and does not let it go 1 but keeps it still in his mouth— 1
the food in his intestines turns bitter; 1 it becomes the poison of asps inside him. 1
He swallows down riches, but he will vomit them up again; 1 God will cast them out of his stomach. 1
He will suck the poison of asps; 1 the viper's tongue will kill him. 1
He will not enjoy the streams, 1 the torrents of honey and butter. 1
He will give back the fruit of his labor and will not be able to eat it; 1 he will not enjoy the wealth earned by his commerce. 1
For he has oppressed and neglected poor people; 1 he has violently taken away houses that he did not build. 1
Because he has known no satisfaction himself, 1 he will not be able to save anything in which he takes pleasure. 1
There is nothing left that he did not devour; 1 therefore his prosperity will not be permanent. 1
In the abundance of his wealth he will fall into trouble; 1 the hand of everyone who is in poverty will come against him. 1
When he is about to fill his stomach, God will throw the fierceness of his wrath on him; 1 God will rain it down on him while he is eating. 1
Although that man will flee from the iron weapon, 1 a bow of bronze will shoot him. 1
He pulls it out of his back 1 and the gleaming point comes out of his liver. 1 Terrors come over him. 1
Complete darkness is reserved for his treasures; 1 a fire not fanned will devour him; 1 it will consume what is left in his tent. 1
The heavens will reveal his iniquity, 1 and the earth will rise up against him as a witness. 1
The wealth of his house will vanish; 1 his goods will flow away on the day of God's wrath. 1
This is the wicked man's portion from God, 1 the heritage reserved for him by God.”
