Job 6
Then Job answered and said, 1
“Oh, if only my anguish were weighed; 1 if only all my calamity were laid in the balance! 1
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas. 1 That is why my words were reckless. 1
For the arrows of the Almighty are in me, 1 my spirit drinks up the poison; 1 the terrors of God have arranged themselves in array against me. 1
Does the wild donkey bray in despair when he has grass? 1 Or does the ox low in hunger when it has fodder? 1
Can that which has no taste be eaten without salt? 1 Or is there any taste in the white of an egg? 1
I refuse to touch them; 1 they are like disgusting food to me. 1
Oh, that I might have my request; 1 oh, that God would grant me the thing I long for: 1
that it would please God to crush me once, 1 that he would let loose his hand and cut me off from this life! 1
May this still be my consolation— 1 even if I exult in pain that does not lessen: 1 that I have not denied the words of the Holy One. 1
What is my strength, that I should try to wait? 1 What is my end, that I should prolong my life? 1
Is my strength the strength of stones? 1 Or is my flesh made of bronze? 1
Is it not true that I have no help in myself, 1 and that wisdom has been driven out of me? 1
To the person who is about to faint, faithfulness should be shown by his friend; 1 even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty. 1
But my brothers have been as faithful to me as a desert streambed, 1 as channels of water that pass away to nothing, 1
which are darkened because of ice over them, 1 and because of the snow that hides itself in them. 1
When they thaw out, they vanish; 1 when it is hot, they melt out of their place. 1
The caravans that travel by their way turn aside for water; 1 they wander into barren land and then perish. 1
Caravans from Tema looked there, 1 while companies of Sheba hoped in them. 1
They were disappointed because they had been confident of finding water. 1 They went there, but they were deceived. 1
For now you friends are nothing to me; 1 you see my dreadful situation and are afraid. 1
Did I say to you, 'Give something to me?' 1 Or, 'Offer me a gift from your wealth?' 1
Or, 'Save me from my adversary's hand?' 1 Or, 'Ransom me from the hand of my oppressors?' 1
Teach me, and I will hold my peace; 1 make me understand where I have been wrong. 1
How painful are truthful words! 1 But your arguments, how do they actually rebuke me? 1
Do you plan to ignore my words, 1 treating the words of a desperate man like the wind? 1
Indeed, you cast lots for a fatherless child, 1 and haggle over your friend like merchandise. 1
Now, therefore, please look at me, 1 for surely I would not lie to your face. 1
Relent, I beg you; let there be no injustice with you; 1 Indeed, relent, for my cause is just. 1
Is there evil on my tongue? 1 Cannot my mouth detect malicious things?
