Job 41
Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook? 1 Or tie up his jaws with a cord? 1
Can you put a rope into his nose, 1 or pierce his jaw through with a hook? 1
Will he make many pleas to you? 1 Will he speak soft words to you? 1
Will he make a covenant with you, 1 that you should take him for a servant forever? 1
Will you play with him as you would with a bird? 1 Will you tie him up for your servant girls? 1
Will the groups of fishermen bargain for him? 1 Will they divide him up to trade among the merchants? 1
Can you fill his hide with harpoons 1 or his head with fishing spears? 1
Put your hand on him just once, 1 and you will remember the battle and do it no more. 1
See, the hope of anyone who does that is a lie; 1 will not anyone be thrown down to the ground just by the sight of him? 1
None is so fierce that he dare stir Leviathan up; 1 who, then, is he who can stand before me? 1
Who has first given anything to me in order that I should repay him? 1 Whatever is under the whole sky is mine. 1
I will not keep silent concerning Leviathan's legs, 1 nor about the matter of his strength, nor about his graceful form. 1
Who can strip off his outer covering? 1 Who can penetrate his double armor? 1
Who can open the doors of his face— 1 ringed with his teeth, which are a terror? 1
his back is made up of rows of shields, 1 tight together as with a close seal. 1
One is so near to another 1 that no air can come between them. 1
They are joined to each other; 1 they stick together, so that they cannot be pulled apart. 1
Light flashes out from his snorting; 1 his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning dawn. 1
Out of his mouth go burning torches, 1 sparks of fire leap out. 1
Out of his nostrils goes smoke 1 like a boiling pot on a fire that has been fanned to be very hot. 1
His breath kindles coals into flame; 1 fires go out from his mouth. 1
In his neck is strength, 1 and terror dances in front of him. 1
The folds of his flesh are joined together; 1 they are firm on him; they cannot be moved. 1
His heart is as hard as a stone— 1 indeed, as hard as a lower millstone. 1
When he raises himself up, even the gods become afraid; 1 because of fear, they draw back. 1
If a sword strikes him, it does nothing— 1 and neither does a spear, an arrow, or any other pointed weapon. 1
He thinks of iron as if it were straw, 1 and of bronze as if it were rotten wood. 1
An arrow cannot make him flee; 1 to him sling stones become chaff. 1
Clubs are regarded as straw; 1 he laughs at the whirring flight of a spear. 1
His lower parts are like sharp pieces of broken pottery; 1 he leaves a spreading trail in the mud as if he were a threshing sledge. 1
He makes the deep to foam up like a pot of boiling water; 1 he makes the sea like a pot of ointment. 1
He makes a shining wake behind him; 1 one would think the deep had gray hair. 1
On earth there is no equal to him, 1 who has been made to live without fear. 1
He sees everything that is proud; 1 he is king over all the sons of pride.”
