Job 1
There was a certain man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; 1 And that man was true, blameless, righteous, and godly, 1 Abstaining from everything evil. 1
And he had seven sons and three daughters. 1
And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, 1 Three thousand camels, 1 Five hundred yoke of oxen, 1 Five hundred she-asses in the pastures, 1 And a very great household, 1 And he had a great husbandry on the earth; 1 And that man was most noble of the men of the east. 1
And his sons visiting one another 1 Prepared a banquet every day, 1 Taking with them also their three sisters 1 To eat and drink with them. 1
And when the days of the banquet were completed, 1 Job sent and purified them, having risen up in the morning, 1 And offered sacrifices for them, according to their number, 1 And one calf for a sin offering for their souls: 1 For Job said, Lest peradventure my sons have thought evil in their minds against God. 1 Thus then Job did continually. 1
And it came to pass on a day, 1 That, behold, the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, 1 And the devil came with them. 1
And the Lord said to the devil, Whence art thou come? 1 And the devil answered the Lord, and said, 1 I am come from compassing the earth, and walking up and down in the world. 1
And the Lord said to him, 1 Hast thou diligently considered my servant Job, 1 That there is none like him on the earth, 1 A man blameless, true, godly, 1 Abstaining from everything evil? 1
Then the devil answered, and said before the Lord, 1 Does Job worship the Lord for nothing? 1
Hast thou not made a hedge about him, and about his household, 1 And all his possessions round about? 1 And hast thou not blessed the works of his hands, 1 And multiplied his cattle upon the land? 1
But put forth thy hand, and touch all that he has: 1 Verily he will curse thee to thy face. 1
Then the Lord said to the devil, 1 Behold, I give into thy hand all that he has, 1 But touch not him. 1 So the devil went out from the presence of the Lord. 1
And it came to pass on a certain day, 1 That Job’s sons and his daughters 1 Were drinking wine in the house of their elder brother. 1
And, behold, there came a messenger to Job, and said to him, 1 The yokes of oxen were plowing, 1 And the she-asses were feeding near them; 1
And the spoilers came and took them for a prey, 1 And slew the servants with the sword; 1 And I having escaped alone am come to tell thee. 1
While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger, and said to Job, 1 Fire has fallen from heaven, and burned up the sheep, and devoured the shepherds likewise; 1 And I having escaped alone am come to tell thee. 1
While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger, and said to Job, 1 The horsemen formed three companies against us, 1 And surrounded the camels, and took them for a prey, 1 And slew the servants with the sword; 1 And I only escaped, and am come to tell thee. 1
While he is yet speaking, another messenger comes, saying to Job, 1 While thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking with their elder brother, 1
Suddenly a great wind came on from the desert, and caught the four corners of the house, 1 And the house fell upon thy children, and they are dead; 1 And I have escaped alone, and am come to tell thee. 1
So Job arose, and rent his garments, 1 And shaved the hair of his head, 1 And fell on the earth, and worshiped,
and said, 1 I myself came forth naked from my mother’s womb, 1 And naked shall I return thither: 1 The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away: 1 As it seemed good to the Lord, so has it come to pass; 1 Blessed be the name of the Lord. 1
In all these events that befell him 1 Job sinned not at all before the Lord, 1 And did not impute folly to God.
