Job 3
After this Job opened his mouth, 1 And cursed his day,
saying, 1
Let the day perish in which I was born, 1 And that night in which they said, Behold a man-child! 1
Let that night be darkness, 1 And let not the Lord regard it from above, 1 Neither let light come upon it. 1
But let darkness and the shadow of death seize it; 1 Let blackness come upon it; 1
Let that day and night be cursed, 1 Let darkness carry them away; 1 Let it not come into the days of the year, 1 Neither let it be numbered with the days of the months. 1
But let that night be pain, 1 And let not mirth come upon it, nor joy. 1
But let him that curses that day curse it, 1 Even he that is ready to attack the great whale. 1
Let the stars of that night be darkened; 1 Let it remain dark, and not come into light; 1 And let it not see the morning star arise: 1
Because it shut not up the gates of my mother’s womb, 1 For so it would have removed sorrow from my eyes. 1
For why died I not in the belly? 1 And why did I not come forth from the womb and die immediately? 1
And why did the knees support me? 1 And why did I suck the breasts? 1
Now I should have lain down and been quiet, 1 I should have slept and been at rest, 1
With kings and counselors of the earth, 1 Who gloried in their swords; 1
Or with rulers, whose gold was abundant, 1 Who filled their houses with silver: 1
Or I should have been as an untimely birth proceeding from his mother’s womb, 1 Or as infants who never saw light. 1
There the ungodly have burned out the fury of rage; 1 There the wearied in body rest. 1
And the men of old time have together 1 Ceased to hear the exactor’s voice. 1
The small and great are there, 1 And the servant that feared his lord. 1
For why is light given to those who are in bitterness, 1 And life to the souls which are in griefs? 1
Who desire death, and obtain it not, 1 Digging for it as for treasures; 1
And would be very joyful if they should gain it? 1
Death is rest to such a man, 1 For God has hedged him in. 1
For my groaning comes before my food, 1 And I weep being beset with terror. 1
For the terror of which I meditated has come upon me, 1 And that which I had feared has befallen me. 1
I was not at peace, nor quiet, nor had I rest; 1 Yet wrath came upon me.
