Job 20
Then Zophar the Minaean answered and said, 1
I did not suppose that thou wouldest answer thus: 1 Neither do ye understand more than I. 1
I will hear my shameful reproach; 1 And the spirit of my understanding answers me. 1
Hast thou not known these things of old, 1 From the time that man was set upon the earth? 1
But the mirth of the ungodly is a signal downfall, 1 And the joy of transgressors is destruction: 1
Although his gifts should go up to heaven, 1 And his sacrifice reach the clouds. 1
For when he shall seem to be now established, 1 Then he shall utterly perish: 1 And they that knew him shall say, Where is he? 1
Like a dream that has fled away, he shall not be found; 1 And he has fled like a vision of the night. 1
The eye has looked upon him, but shall not see him again; 1 And his place shall no longer perceive him. 1
Let his inferiors destroy his children, 1 And let his hands kindle the fire of sorrow. 1
His bones have been filled with vigor of his youth, 1 And it shall lie down with him in the dust. 1
Though evil be sweet in his mouth, 1 Though he will hide it under his tongue; 1
Though he will not spare it, and will not leave it, 1 But will keep it in the midst of his throat: 1
Yet he shall not at all be able to help himself; 1 The gall of an asp is in his belly. 1
His wealth unjustly collected shall be vomited up; 1 A messenger of wrath shall drag him out of his house. 1
And let him suck the poison of serpents, 1 And let the serpent’s tongue slay him. 1
Let him not see the milk of the pastures, 1 Nor the supplies of honey and butter. 1
He has labored unprofitably and in vain, for wealth of which he shall not taste: 1 It is as a lean thing, unfit for food, which he cannot swallow. 1
For he has broken down the houses of many mighty men: 1 And he has plundered a habitation, though he built it not. 1
There is no security to his possessions; 1 He shall not be saved by his desire. 1
There is nothing remaining of his provisions; 1 Therefore his goods shall not flourish. 1
But when he shall seem to be just satisfied, he shall be straitened; 1 And all distress shall come upon him. 1
If by any means he would fill his belly, 1 Let God send upon him the fury of wrath; 1 Let him bring a torrent of pains upon him. 1
And he shall by no means escape from the power of the sword; 1 Let the brazen bow wound him. 1
And let the arrow pierce through his body; 1 And let the stars be against his dwelling place: 1 Let terrors come upon him. 1
And let all darkness wait for him: 1 A fire that burns not out shall consume him; 1 And let a stranger plague his house. 1
And let the heaven reveal his iniquities, 1 And the earth rise up against him. 1
Let destruction bring his house to an end; 1 Let a day of wrath come upon him. 1
This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, 1 And the possession of his goods appointed him by the all-seeing God.
