Job 39
Say if thou knowest the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, 1 And if thou hast marked the calving of the hinds: 1
And if thou hast numbered the full months of their being with young, 1 And if thou hast relieved their pangs: 1
And hast reared their young without fear; 1 And wilt thou loosen their pangs? 1
Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: 1 Their young will go forth, and will not return to them. 1
And who is he that sent forth the wild ass free? 1 And who loosed his bands? 1
Whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, 1 And the salt land his coverts. 1
He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, 1 And hears not the chiding of the tax gatherer. 1
He will survey the mountains as his pasture, 1 And he seeks after every green thing. 1
And will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, 1 Or to lie down at thy manger? 1
And wilt thou bind his yoke with thongs, 1 Or will he plow furrows for thee in the plain? 1
And dost thou trust him, because his strength is great? 1 And wilt thou commit thy works to him? 1
And wilt thou believe that he will return to thee thy seed, 1 And bring it in to thy threshing floor? 1
The peacock has a beautiful wing: 1 If the stork and the ostrich conceive, it is worthy of notice, 1
For the ostrich will leave her eggs in the ground, 1 And warm them on the dust, 1
And has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, 1 And the wild beasts of the field trample them. 1
She has hardened herself against her young ones, as though she bereaved not herself: 1 She labors in vain without fear. 1
For God has withholden wisdom from her, 1 And not given her a portion in understanding. 1
In her season she will lift herself on high; 1 She will scorn the horse and his rider. 1
Hast thou invested the horse with strength, 1 And clothed his neck with terror? 1
And hast thou clad him in perfect armor, 1 And made his breast glorious with courage? 1
He paws exulting in the plain, 1 And goes forth in strength into the plain. 1
He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, 1 And will by no means turn back from the sword. 1
The bow and sword resound against him; 1 And his rage will swallow up the ground: 1
And he will not believe until the trumpet sounds. 1
And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! 1 And afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing. 1
And does the hawk remain steady by thy wisdom, 1 Having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south? 1
And does the eagle rise at thy command, 1 And the vulture remain sitting over his nest, 1
On a crag of a rock, and in a secret place? 1
Thence he seeks food, 1 His eyes observe from far. 1
And his young ones roll themselves in blood, 1 And wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found.
