Psalms 22

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? 1 Why are you so far from saving me and far from the words of my anguish? 1

My God, I cry out in the daytime, but you do not answer, 1 and at night I am not silent! 1

Yet you are holy; 1 you sit as king with the praises of Israel. 1

Our ancestors trusted in you; 1 they trusted in you, and you rescued them. 1

They cried to you and they were rescued. 1 They trusted in you and were not disappointed. 1

But I am a worm and not a man, 1 a disgrace to humanity and despised by the people. 1

All those who see me taunt me; 1 they mock me; they shake their heads at me. 1

They say, “He trusts in Yahweh; 1 let Yahweh rescue him. 1 Let him rescue him, for he delights in him.” 1

For you brought me from the womb; 1 you made me trust you when I was on my mother's breasts. 1

I have been thrown on you from the womb; 1 you are my God since I was in my mother's womb! 1

Do not be far away from me, for trouble is near; 1 there is no one to help. 1

Many bulls surround me; 1 strong bulls of Bashan surround me. 1

They open their mouths wide against me 1 like a roaring lion ripping its victim. 1

I am being poured out like water, 1 and all my bones are dislocated. 1 My heart is like wax; 1 it melts away within my inner parts. 1

My strength has dried up like a piece of pottery; 1 my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. 1 You have laid me in the dust of death. 1

For dogs have surrounded me; 1 a company of evildoers has encircled me; 1 they have pierced my hands and my feet. 1

I can count all my bones. 1 They look and stare at me. 1

They divide my garments among themselves, 1 they cast lots for my clothes. 1

Do not be far away, Yahweh; 1 please hurry to help me, my strength! 1

Rescue my soul from the sword, 1 my only life from the claws of wild dogs. 1

Save me from the lion's mouth; 1 rescue me from the horns of the wild oxen. 1

I will declare your name to my brothers; 1 in the midst of the assembly I will praise you. 1

You who fear Yahweh, praise him! 1 All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! 1 Stand in awe of him, all you descendants of Israel! 1

For he has not despised or abhorred the suffering of the afflicted one; 1 Yahweh has not hidden his face from him; 1 when the afflicted one cried to him, he heard. 1

My praise will be because of you in the great assembly; 1 I will fulfill my vows before those who fear him. 1

The oppressed will eat and be satisfied; 1 those who seek Yahweh will praise him. 1 May your hearts live forever. 1

All the peoples of the earth will remember and turn to Yahweh; 1 all the families of the nations will bow down before you. 1

For the kingdom is Yahweh's; 1 he is the ruler over the nations. 1

All the prosperous people of the earth will feast and will worship; 1 all those who are descending into the dust will bow before him, 1 those who cannot preserve their own lives. 1

A generation to come will serve him; 1 they will tell the next generation of the Lord. 1

They will come and tell of his righteousness; 1 they will tell to a people not yet born what he has done!
