Psalms 89
1I will sing of Yahweh's acts of covenant faithfulness forever. 1 I will proclaim your truthfulness to future generations. 1
2For I have said, “Covenant faithfulness has been established forever; 1 your truthfulness you have established in the heavens.” 1
3“I have made a covenant with my chosen one, 1 I have made an oath to David my servant. 1
4I will establish your descendants forever, 1 and I will establish your throne through all generations.” Selah 1
5The heavens praise your wonders, Yahweh; 1 your truthfulness is praised in the assembly of the holy ones. 1
6For who in the skies can be compared to Yahweh? 1 Who among the sons of the gods is like Yahweh? 1
7He is a God who is greatly honored in the council of the holy ones 1 and is awesome among all who surround him. 1
8Yahweh God of hosts, 1 who is strong like you, Yahweh? 1 Your truthfulness surrounds you. 1
9You rule the raging sea; 1 when the waves surge, you calm them. 1
10You crushed Rahab as one who is killed. 1 You scattered your enemies with your strong arm. 1
11The heavens belong to you, and the earth also. 1 You made the world and all it contains. 1
12You created the north and the south. 1 Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name. 1
13You have a mighty arm 1 and a strong hand, and your right hand is high. 1
14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. 1 Covenant faithfulness and trustworthiness come before you. 1
15Blessed are the people who worship you! 1 Yahweh, they walk in the light of your face. 1
16They rejoice in your name all day long, 1 and in your righteousness they exalt you. 1
17You are their majestic strength, 1 and by your favor we are victorious. 1
18For our shield belongs to Yahweh; 1 our king belongs to the Holy One of Israel. 1
19Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones; + 89:19 Many mss have the singular faithful one instead of faithful ones . 1 you said, “I have set a crown on a mighty one.” + 89:19 The MT has I will place help upon a warrior . Some translate the word for help as crown and that is how the ULB has translated the word here. 1 I have raised up one chosen from among the people. 1
20I have chosen David my servant; 1 with my holy oil have I anointed him. 1
21My hand will support him; 1 my arm will strengthen him. 1
22No enemy will deceive him; 1 no son of wickedness will oppress him. 1
23I will crush his enemies before him; 1 I will kill those who hate him. 1
24My truth and my covenant faithfulness will be with him; 1 by my name he will be victorious. 1
25I will place his hand over the sea 1 and his right hand over the rivers. 1
26He will call out to me, 'You are my Father, 1 my God, and the rock of my salvation.' 1
27I also will place him as my firstborn son, 1 the most exalted of the kings of the earth. 1
28I will extend my covenant faithfulness to him forever; 1 and my covenant with him will be secure. 1
29I will make his descendants endure forever 1 and his throne as enduring as the skies above. 1
30If his children forsake my law 1 and do not walk in my regulations, 1
31if they break my rules 1 and do not keep my commands, 1
32then will I punish their rebellion with a rod 1 and their iniquity with blows. 1
33But I will not remove my steadfast love from him 1 or be unfaithful to my promise. 1
34I will not break my covenant 1 or change the words of my lips. 1
35Once and for all I have sworn by my holiness— 1 I will not lie to David: 1
36his descendants will continue forever 1 and his throne as long as the sun before me. 1
37It will be established forever like the moon, 1 the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah 1
38But you have refused and rejected; 1 you have been angry with your anointed king. 1
39You have renounced the covenant of your servant. 1 You have desecrated his crown on the ground. 1
40You have broken down all his walls. 1 You have ruined his strongholds. 1
41All who pass by have robbed him. 1 He has become an object of disgust to his neighbors. 1
42You have raised the right hand of his enemies; 1 you have made all his enemies rejoice. 1
43You turn back the edge of his sword 1 and have not made him stand when in battle. 1
44You have brought his splendor to an end; 1 you have brought down his throne to the ground. 1
45You have shortened the days of his youth. 1 You have covered him with shame. Selah 1
46How long, Yahweh? Will you hide yourself, forever? 1 How long will your anger burn like fire? 1
47Oh, think about how short my time is, 1 and for what uselessness you have created all the children of mankind! 1
48Who can live and not die, 1 or rescue his own life from the hand of Sheol? Selah 1
49Lord, where are your former acts of covenant faithfulness 1 that you swore to David in your truthfulness? 1
50Call to mind, Lord, the mocking directed against your servants 1 and how I bear in my heart so many insults from the nations. 1
51Your enemies hurl insults, Yahweh; 1 they mock the footsteps of your anointed one. 1
52Blessed be Yahweh forever. 1 Amen and Amen. 1 Book Four
