Psalms 40

I waited patiently for Yahweh; 1 he listened to me and heard my cry. 1

He brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, 1 and he set my feet on a rock and made my steps secure. 1

He has put a new song in my mouth, praise to our God. 1 Many will see it and honor him 1 and will trust in Yahweh. 1

Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust 1 and does not honor the proud or those who turn away from him to lies. 1

Many, Yahweh my God, are the wonderful deeds that you have done, 1 and your thoughts which are about us cannot be numbered; 1 if I declared and spoke of them, 1 they would be more than could be counted. 1

You have no delight in sacrifice or offering, 1 but you have opened my ears; 1 you have not required burnt offerings or sin offerings. 1

Then said I, “See, I have come; 1 it is written about me in the scroll of the document. 1

I delight to do your will, my God; 1 your laws are in my heart.” 1

I have proclaimed good news of your righteousness in the great assembly; 1 Yahweh, you know that my lips have not kept back from doing this. 1

I have not concealed your righteousness in my heart; 1 I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation; 1 I have not concealed your covenant faithfulness or your trustworthiness from the great assembly. 1

Do not keep back your acts of mercy from me, Yahweh; 1 let your covenant faithfulness and your trustworthiness always preserve me. 1

Troubles that cannot be numbered surround me; 1 my iniquities have caught up with me so that I am no longer able to see anything; 1 they are more than the hairs on my head, 1 and my heart has failed me. 1

Be pleased, Yahweh, to rescue me; 1 hurry to help me, Yahweh. 1

Let them be ashamed and completely disappointed 1 who pursue my life to take it away. 1 Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor, 1 those who delight in hurting me. 1

Let them be shocked because of their shame, 1 those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” 1

But may all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; 1 let everyone who loves your salvation say continually, 1 “May Yahweh be praised.” 1

I am poor and needy; 1 yet the Lord thinks about me. 1 You are my help and you come to my rescue; 1 do not delay, my God.
