Psalms 44

We have heard with our ears, God, 1 our fathers have told us 1 what work you did in their days, 1 in the days of old. 1

You drove out the nations with your hand, 1 but you planted our people; 1 you afflicted the peoples, 1 but you spread our people out in the land. 1

For they did not obtain the land for their possession by their own sword, 1 neither did their own arm save them; 1 but your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, 1 because you were favorable to them. 1

God, You are my King; 1 command victory for Jacob. 1

Through you we will push down our adversaries; 1 through your name we will tread them under, those who rise up against us. 1

For I will not trust in my bow, 1 neither will my sword save me. 1

But you have saved us from our adversaries, 1 and have put to shame those who hate us. 1

In God we have made our boast all the day long, 1 and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah 1

But now you have thrown us off and brought us dishonor, 1 and you do not go out with our armies. 1

You make us turn back from the adversary; 1 and those who hate us take spoil for themselves. 1

You have made us like sheep to be slaughtered 1 and have scattered us among the nations. 1

You sell your people for nothing; 1 you have not increased your wealth by doing so. 1

You make us a rebuke to our neighbors, 1 scoffed and mocked by those around us. 1

You make us an insult among the nations, 1 a shaking of the head among the peoples. 1

All the day long my dishonor is before me, 1 and the shame of my face has covered me 1

because of the voice of him who rebukes and insults, 1 because of the enemy and the avenger. 1

All this has come on us; yet we have not forgotten you 1 or dealt falsely with your covenant. 1

Our heart has not turned back; 1 our steps have not gone from your way. 1

Yet you have severely broken us in the place of jackals 1 and covered us with the shadow of death. 1

If we have forgotten the name of our God 1 or spread out our hands to a strange god, 1

would not God search this out? 1 For he knows the secrets of the heart. 1

Indeed, for your sake we are being killed all day long; 1 we are considered to be sheep for the slaughter. 1

Awake, why do you sleep, Lord? 1 Arise, do not throw us off permanently. 1

Why do you hide your face 1 and forget our affliction and our oppression? 1

For we have melted away into the dust; 1 our bodies cling to the earth. 1

Rise up for our help 1 and redeem us for the sake of your covenant faithfulness.
