Psalms 55

Give ear to my prayer, God; 1 and do not hide yourself from my plea. 1

Pay attention to me and answer me; 1 I have no rest in my troubles 1

because of the voice of my enemies, 1 because of the oppression of the wicked; 1 for they bring trouble on me 1 and persecute me in anger. 1

My heart trembles within me, 1 and the terrors of death have fallen on me. 1

Fearfulness and trembling have come on me, 1 and horror has overwhelmed me. 1

I said, “Oh, if only I had wings like a dove! 1 Then would I fly away and be at rest. 1

See, then I would wander far away; 1 I would stay in the wilderness. Selah 1

I would hurry to a shelter 1 from the stormy wind and tempest.” 1

Devour them, Lord, confuse their language! 1 For I have seen violence and strife in the city. 1

Day and night they go about on its walls; 1 iniquity and mischief are in the middle of it. 1

Wickedness is in the middle of it; 1 oppression and deceit do not leave its streets. 1

For it was not an enemy who rebuked me, 1 then I could have borne it; 1 neither was it he who hated me who raised himself up against me, 1 then I would have hidden myself from him. 1

But it was you, a man equal to myself, 1 my companion and my close friend. 1

We had sweet fellowship together; 1 we walked in the house of God with the throng. 1

Let death come suddenly on them; 1 let them go down alive to Sheol, 1 for wickedness is where they live, right among them. 1

As for me, I will call on God, 1 and Yahweh will save me. 1

In the evening, morning and at noonday I complain and moan; 1 he will hear my voice. 1

He will safely rescue my life from the battle that was against me, 1 for those who fought against me were many. 1

God, the one who rules from eternity, 1 will hear them and humiliate them. Selah 1 They never change, 1 and they do not fear God. 1

My friend has raised his hands against those who were at peace with him; 1 he has not respected the covenant that he had. 1

His mouth was smooth as butter, 1 but his heart was hostile; 1 his words were softer than oil, 1 yet they were actually drawn swords. 1

Place your burdens on Yahweh, and he will sustain you; 1 he will never allow a righteous person to totter. 1

But you, God, will bring the wicked down into the pit of destruction; 1 bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live even half as long as others, 1 but I will trust in you.
