Psalms 39
1I decided, “I will watch what I say 1 so that I do not sin with my tongue. 1 I will muzzle my mouth 1 while in the presence of an evil man.” 1
2I kept silent; I kept back my words even from saying anything good, 1 and my pain grew worse. 1
3My heart became hot; 1 when I thought about these things, it burned like a fire. 1 Then finally I spoke. 1
4“Yahweh, make me know when will be the end of my life 1 and the extent of my days. 1 Show me how transient I am. 1
5See, you have made my days only the width of my hand, 1 and my lifetime is like nothing before you. 1 Surely every man is a single breath. Selah 1
6Surely every man walks about like a shadow. 1 Surely everyone hurries about 1 to accumulate riches although they do not know who will receive them. 1
7Now, Lord, for what am I waiting? 1 You are my only hope. 1
8Rescue me from my sins; 1 do not make me the reproach of fools. 1
9I am silent and cannot open my mouth, 1 because it is you who has done it. 1
10Stop wounding me; 1 I am overwhelmed by the blow of your hand. 1
11When you discipline people for sin, 1 you consume the things they desire like a moth; 1 surely all people are nothing but vapor. Selah 1
12Hear my prayer, Yahweh, and listen to me; 1 listen to my weeping! 1 Do not be deaf to me, 1 for I am like a foreigner with you, a refugee like all my ancestors were. 1
13Turn your gaze from me so that I may smile again 1 before I die.”
